Abd al-Basit Abd al-Samad (1345 - 1409 AH), an Egyptian Qur’an reciter and one of the prominent figures in this field. He was called the “Voice of Mecca.” He memorized the Noble Qur’an at the hands of Sheikh Muhammad al-Amir, the sheikh of his village book, and took the readings from the hands of the master Sheikh Muhammad Salim Hamadeh.

He entered the Egyptian radio in 1951, and his first recitations were from Surat Fater. He was appointed as a reciter for the Imam Al-Shafi’i Mosque in 1952, then for the Imam Al-Hussein Mosque in 1958, succeeding Sheikh Mahmoud Ali Al-Banna.

He left a wealth of recordings for the radio, in addition to recited and glorified Qur’ans, as well as recited Qur’ans of Arab and Islamic countries. He traveled around the world as a guide to the Book of God, and he was the first president of the Syndicate of Egyptian Readers in 1984.

The origin of Sheikh Abdul Basit

The reciter, Sheikh Abd al-Basit Abd al-Samad, was born in 1345 AH / 1927 AD in the village of Al-Marazah, affiliated to the Armant Center in Qena Governorate (before the Armant Center was annexed to the Luxor Governorate in 2009 with its establishment.

He grew up in an environment that cares about the Holy Qur’an in memorization and recitation. The grandfather was one of the memorizers who are known to be able to memorize the Holy Qur’an and improve it with rulings, and the father is Sheikh Muhammad Abd al-Samad. He was one of the glorious reciters of the Qur’an in memorization and recitation. Abdul Basit, who is six years old.

The beginning of his learning and the development of his talent

The talented child, Abdul Basit, joined the book of Sheikh Prince Parment, and his sheikh received him in the best way. The sheikh noticed his talented student that he was quick to absorb, intensely attentive, and followed his sheikh with care and love.

Sheikh Abd al-Basit says in his memoirs: “I was ten years old, during which I completed memorizing the Qur’an, which was flowing on my tongue like a running river. And the readings were conducted by Sheikh (Muhammad Selim), but the distance between Armant, one of the cities in southern Egypt, and Tanta, one of the cities of Lower Egypt, was very far, but it was related to formulating my future and drawing its features, which made me prepare for travel, and one day before heading to Tanta, we learned of the arrival of Sheikh Muhammad Selim He went to (Arment) to settle there as a teacher of readings at the religious institute in Armant, and the people of Armant received him in the best way and celebrated him.
